JamesĪdd to Goodreads | Amazon | B&N | Book Depository Synopsis ![]() ![]() ![]() Told in her own inimitable style, this book transcends genres and categories: guidebook, memoir, poetry, and pure delight. Here in short spellbinding essays are glimpses of the tumultuous life that led Angelou to an exalted place in American letters and taught her lessons in compassion and fortitude: how she was brought up by her indomitable grandmother in segregated Arkansas, taken in at thirteen by her more worldly and less religious mother, and grew to be an awkward, six-foot-tall teenager whose first experience of loveless sex paradoxically left her with her greatest gift, a son.Whether she is recalling such lost friends as Coretta Scott King and Ossie Davis, extolling honesty, decrying vulgarity, explaining why becoming a Christian is a "lifelong endeavor," or simply singing the praises of a meal of red rice-Maya Angelou writes from the heart to millions of women she considers her extended family. For a world of devoted readers, a much-awaited new volume of absorbing stories and inspirational wisdom from one of our best-loved writers.Dedicated to the daughter she never had but sees all around her, Letter to My Daughter reveals Maya Angelou's path to living well and living a life with meaning. ![]() 5/20/2023 0 Comments Surprise kill vanish book![]() ![]() Graff, author of Raven Rock: The Story of the U.S. ![]() Highly recommended for those seeking a better understanding of American foreign policy in action' Jacob Sherman, Library Journal 'A behind-the-scenes look at the most shadowy corners of the American intelligence community.Well-sourced and well-paced, this book is full of surprises' Kirkus'Annie Jacobsen takes us inside the darkest and most morally ambiguous corner of our government, where politicians ask brave men and women to kill-up close and personal-on America's behalf' Garrett M. ![]() ![]() THE USA TODAY BESTSELLER'As fast paced as a thriller' Fred Burton, Stratfor Talks' Pen and Sword Podcast'Jacobsen here presents a tour de force exploring the CIA's paramilitary activities.this excellent work feels like uncovering the tip of the iceberg. ![]() 5/20/2023 0 Comments Bovary madame![]() ![]() For reasons of health he retired to the family's new home in Le Croisset, a suburb of Rouen. His prose mercifully reads like a novel more than a historical lecture. Tom Holland manages to give a fresh new spin on a very old subject. Rubicon concludes with the peaceful death of Augustus after decades of turbulence. ![]() The book then surveys in turn the usual events: The Grachhi Brothers Marius and Sulla and the Mithradates War Cicero and Crassus, Pompei and Caesar, Antony and Octavian. The first major event described is the Social War between Rome and its Italian client states. We are then treated to a general survey of the Roman Republic and its mores. It is believed that 'Goblin Market' inspired Lewis Carroll's 'Alice's Adventures in Wonderland'. It is the most widely known and read of all her works and launched her literary career. But that’s all the more reason this story is a nice way of making historical events and figures more memorable. ![]() For that matter, I didn’t know about him either, though I can’t guarantee I didn’t read about him in passing during a history class in school and simply forgot about him. The doctor who first posited that cholera was spread by contaminated water, rather than through the air, for example, is certainly not one that kids this age are likely to have heard about. I did still like it, though, and appreciate the way these stories bring somewhat lesser-known pockets of history to life for children. I did not like this one quite as much as the third in the arc, which might have been due to the respective subject matters as much as anything. I actually read part 3 of this story arc (which, in turn, is part of a much larger series) first, then decided to go back and read the preceding stories. ![]() But when Patrick learns that he drank water from the contaminated pump, he’s not certain he’ll be able to make it back from 1854 alive.
